COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's golf team sits atop the leaderboard after the opening round of the Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) Fall Invitational at Old Hickory Country Club.
Despite shooting a season-high 324, the Blue Raiders lead by two shots over University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and Lindenwood (Mo.) University. Trevecca Nazarene (331), University of Mobile (Ala.) (335) and Bethel (Tenn.) College (339) round out the six-team field.
Lindsey Wilson used a feast or famine approach to gain the overall lead. The Blue Raiders recorded a tournament best eight team birdies in the first round. But in the closing holes, LWC gave away those birdies by playing the last four holes 19 over par as a team.
Included in their struggles was the team's play on the par 3s. The Blue Raiders entered the tournament second in the NAIA in par 3 scoring averaging 3.28 strokes per hole. On Monday, Lindsey Wilson played the par 3s at an average of 3.80, worst of the six teams participating.
Lindsey Wilson continued its season-long domination of the par 5s. The Blue Raiders bettered their NAIA-leading 5.19 scoring average on the par 5s with a 5.15 average today, including three birdies.
Lindsey Wilson junior Chelsey Key leads the Blue Raiders following an eight over par 80 on the 5,804-yard, par 72 Old Hickory course. Key contributed three birdies -- tied for the tournament lead -- to finish the first round tied for sixth.
Senior Krista Burton and freshman Kelsey Joslyn are tied for ninth following opening round 81s. Burton birdied three consecutive holes during the middle of her round, while Joslyn recorded a team-high nine pars.
Senior Jessica Smith is tied for 12th after an 82 and senior Cheslee Stone is 18th with an 84. Freshman Jennifer MacKinnon is tied for 28th after an 89 playing as an individual.
Mobile's Taylor Kirby leads the tournament following a 73.
The final round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. CT on Tuesday at Old Hickory.
