COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College volleyball team breezed through three straight sets to beat Mid-South Conference foe St. Catharine (Ky.) College 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-13) at Biggers Sports Center on Tuesday.
The Blue Raiders improve to 7-22 overall and 6-4 in MSC play. With the loss, the Patriots drop to 13-27 and 2-9 in the conference.
Junior Racheal Achieng and freshman Ashlie Haworth paced the Lindsey Wilson attack with nine and seven kills, respectively. Achieng tallied a .214 hitting percentage, while Haworth posted a .263 average for the match.
Senior Kelley Burke ran an efficient offense, dishing out 27 assists while also registering seven digs and a kill. Haworth was the leading defender with 17 digs.
The Blue Raiders used a strong service performance to put St. Catharine away, finishing the match with eight service aces.
Haworth, who finished with five aces and only one error, gave Lindsey Wilson some early breathing room with her serve in the first set. Trailing 4-5, the Blue Raiders received three straight aces from the newcomer to build a 7-5 advantage. Haworth went on to serve three more times, leaving LWC up 9-6.
A kill by freshman Andrea Taylor late in the opening set gave Lindsey Wilson its largest lead, 22-12. The Blue Raiders closed out the set with a 25-14 win after another kill by Taylor.
Lindsey Wilson dominated the second set. After a service ace by Taylor, the Blue Raiders led 18-7 and were in complete control of the frame. The Patriots, however, were able to double their scoring with 14 points before a kill by sophomore Kayla Koerber sealed the win.
Burke opened the third set with pin point sets, dishing out four assists which allowed the Blue Raiders to take an early 8-1 advantage. A flurry of errors by the Blue Raiders gave the Patriots second life as they rallied back within three, 12-9.
Eventually the attacks poured in from the Blue Raiders as they posted a match-high .278 hitting percentage as a team in the third set, allowing them to put the Patriots away 25-13.
For the match, LWC hit .210 as a team, while St. Catharine struggled to a -.108 percentage. The Patriots tallied just five assists in the match, compared to 30 for Lindsey Wilson.
The Blue Raiders return to action at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Oct. 22 against another conference opponent, Campbellsville (Ky.) University at Biggers Sports Center.
