COLUMBIA, Ky. -- It was a pitcher's dream for innings one through six in both games of the Lindsey Wilson College and University of Rio Grande (Ohio) doubleheader tonight at Lindsey Wilson Park.

The seventh inning was a different story as the two teams split the doubleheader -- Rio Grande won game one 11-6 and Lindsey Wilson won the second game 2-1 -- on the first day of a weekend series which concludes on Saturday.

In game one, Lindsey Wilson senior Max Rhodes and Rio Grande's Desmond Sullivan were equally effective shutting down the other team's offense.

Sullivan limited Lindsey Wilson to runs in the second and fourth innings on just five hits through five innings while Rhodes allowed just one Rio on five hits in six innings.

The Blue Raiders clung to a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth searching for an insurance run. Lindsey Wilson (8-5, 1-1 in the MSC) found that insurance run and more off the bat of junior Heath Barnes who blasted a grand slam to give the Blue Raiders an insurmountable 6-1 lead heading into the seventh.

But as quickly as the Blue Raiders provided the offensive power, the Redstorm (12-3, 1-1) counter with an explosion of their own.

Rio Grande (12-3, 1-1) scored 10 runs on six hits and a pair of Lindsey Wilson errors on Rhodes, senior reliever Cody Wales -- who suffered the loss -- and sophomore reliever Lance Rose to snatch the game one win from the Blue Raiders.

Barnes finished 1-for-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBIs and sophomore Jeff Murphy added a pair of hits in three plate appearances.

Rio Grande's Tyler Schunk, Chris Mahon and Christian Frias combined for six hits and seven RBIs.

In game two, Lindsey Wilson sophomore Derek Cape -- coming off a no-hitter last weekend -- allowed an unearned run on two hits in a Blue Raider 2-1 win.

Cape continued his dominate pitching this season with his second straight complete game win. He struck out 11 Rio Grande batters while issuing just one walk.

Cape looked as if he would be the hard-luck loser after an unearned run crossed the plate in the fourth inning.

But with two outs in the bottom of seventh inning, Barnes hit a shot of back of the middle off Rio Grande reliever Ryan Chapman. Barnes finished game two with a pair of hits and a run scored.

Lindsey Wilson sophomore Dustin Murphy followed with a double down the left field line to plate Barnes and tie the game at 1-1.

Following a pitching change and a walk by sophomore Drew Barrett, Rhodes doubled to deep left center scoring Murphy to give the Blue Raiders the 2-1 come-from-behind win.

The Blue Raiders' three hits in the seventh was one more than they had in the previous six innings against Rio Grande pitching.
