DANVILLE, Ky. -- Ally Goniea went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, six RBIs and a run scored to lead the Lindsey Wilson College softball team to an 8-0 win against West Virginia Tech in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Millennium Park on Thursday.
The Blue Raiders advance in the winner's bracket to face the University of the Cumberlands at noon CT on Friday.
Lindsey Wilson wasted little time putting together a run to make sure an upset bid by the Golden Bears would be put to rest. Four straight singles by the top of the Blue Raider order helped set up a three-run bottom of the first.
Then in the second inning, after center fielder Emily Carnes had reach on a single and shortstop Jamie Williams had drew a walk, Goniea sent a rocket over the center-field wall to double the Lindsey Wilson advantage to 6-0.
Leading 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, pitcher Anyibell Ramirez reached base on a walk, then stole second base. With Ramirez waiting on second and two outs on the board, Morgan Paschall hit a high fly ball to left field that was bobbled, allowing Ramirez to advance home and score the winning run in the shortened five-inning game.
Ramirez earned the win in the circle, throwing 3.0 innings, while Paschall entered in relif for 2.0 innings.
Both pitchers were in control of the game as Ramirez tallied six strikeouts without giving up a hit in the win. Paschall allowed just one hit and recorded three strikeouts of her own.
Diana Humphreys pitched the entire game for West Virginia Tech, striking out seven batters, while scattering eight hits for six earned runs.
Third baseman Ali Holmes registered the lone hit for the Golden Bears on a line drive to left field.
Carnes was also perfect at the plate today, going 2-for-2 with a run scored. Williams finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, three runs scored and a walk.
