GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College dropped the first of the three-game series with host Georgetown (Ky.) College 4-3 tonight in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Robert N. Wilson Field.
Georgetown starting pitcher Kevin Reuff struck out 13 Blue Raider batters in the complete game win. Lindsey Wilson sophomore starter Derek Cape also went the distance in the losing effort. Cape allowed four runs -- three earned -- while scattering nine Tiger hits in eight innings of work.
Georgetown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Georgetown's Mike Steinke's bases loaded single plated the final two runs of the inning for the Tigers (24-30).
The Blue Raiders (30-24) responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third to cut the Tiger lead to 3-2.
Lindsey Wilson junior Joseph Willis led off the inning with a single to left field. It would be the only ball to reach the outfield in the two-run inning for LWC.
After senior Zach Prichard reached on a walk, sophomore Lance Harrington, junior Heath Barnes and sophomore Garrett Helm each reached base on fielder choices. Willis scored on the Barnes' fielder choice and Prichard crossed the plate on the Helm grounder.
While Lindsey Wilson cut into the Tiger lead in the inning, the Blue Raiders squandered their best opportunity of the game to take a lead leaving the bases loaded. Lindsey Wilson stranded six runners for the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Georgetown's Pete Thackston's RBI double extended the Tigers' lead to 4-2. It was the last run the Tigers would manage off Cape.
Willis once again cut the deficit in half with a RBI single in the sixth, but the Blue Raiders would get no closer. Willis finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI.
Georgetown takes a 1-0 lead in the best of three series. The series winner advances to the double-elimination final four at Campbellsville (Ky.) University next weekend.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on Friday with game three, if necessary, set for Friday night.
